N.J. Budget Okayed, Casinos Reopen

The New Jersey budget crisis is officially over and Atlantic City's casinos are open once again.

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has signed an executive order to lift the government shutdown beginning Saturday. The Democrat leader will later formally sign the budget agreement line by line according to a spokeswoman.

A budget compromise was reached between key Legislators and Gov. Corzine Thursday after six days of partisan debate.

The signing of the executive order came after the state Senate passed the budget compromise following a 23-17 vote with the General Assembly following with a 44-35 vote.

The budget impasse caused the casinos to shut down Wednesday morning when lawmakers failed to adopt a new budget way past deadline. The state was forced to stop all non-essential government services including the Casino Control Commission where mandatory watchdogs for Atlantic City casinos come from.

The commission has asked the inspectors to resume their post in the 12 casinos that will reopen Saturday said spokesman Dan Heneghan.

The closure was unprecedented in New Jersey's legalized gambling trade's 28-year history. The shutdown has resulted in millions of dollars in revenue losses for the casinos and other businesses, as well as millions in state tax revenue for the state.
